Laser-Engraved KA-BAR Knives for Jamestown Container Companies

Jamestown Container Companies came to Mags Custom with a corporate gift idea that required more than one machine to execute: custom-branded KA-BAR knives with their logo on both the metal blade and the polymer sheath. Different materials. Different machines. One finished product.

The Order

Each knife is a KA-BAR, produced at the company’s Olean, New York facility in Cattaraugus County. Jamestown Container wanted their cube logo and company name permanently marked on both surfaces of the knife: the metal and the sheath.

Two Materials, Two Machines

The metal blade and guard required a MOPA fiber laser. MOPA is the right tool for marking dark metals because it produces a precise, high-contrast white logo directly on the steel surface. No paint, no fill, no coating. The mark is in the metal.

The polymer sheaths got a different treatment. Mags Custom used a UV laser, sometimes called a cold laser or cold light machine. UV lasers engrave plastic without generating the heat that causes burning, discoloration, or warping. The result is a sharp, clean mark that sits flush with the surface and holds its look over time. You can run your finger over it and feel the difference.

Most shops have one laser. This order used two, on the same product, to get the right result on each material. Everything done in-house in Frewsburg.

KA-BAR has been manufacturing knives at their Olean facility since the early 1900s, shipping worldwide from Cattaraugus County. Jamestown Container Companies has been a cornerstone of Chautauqua County’s industrial base for decades.
